Why should nurse leaders invest in civility?

  • More than 90% of nurses with 3 years or less of nursing experience reported being bullied by their nursing peers.

  • As many as 60% of newly licensed registered nurses leave their first nursing jobs within 6 months of hire as a direct result of incivility.

  • A Joint Commission survey on bullying revealed that 90% of nurses had witnessed the behaviors while more than 50% of nurses had been victimized.

  • A recent study revealed that  26.3% of nurses reported exposure to incivility on a daily basis and 35.9% reported enduring weekly exposure to incivility over a 6-month time frame.

  • Poor relationships among the healthcare team have been linked to patient and staff injury and illness.

  • It has been estimated that incivility increases healthcare costs by more than $4 billion annually in the United States alone.

***Civil healthcare teams realize better outcomes at lower costs.***
